Questions from a Three Year Old

Two of our best friends have a three year old named Indi. A few weeks ago in the car Indi ripped off a barrage of questions that most adults would love to know the answers to…

Why does Jesus love us? Where does God live? Why did He make us? Can we go see Jesus?

I’m slightly embarrassed to say that as an exercise this week I sat down with these four questions and began to write my theological answers, thoroughly writing scripture references out – then something happened.

My six month old daughter Keziah Joy was playing on the floor and wanted to be picked up. As I picked her up, she looked me in the eyes with a huge grin and let out a laugh. At that moment my important, scripture-based theology got infused with the life force of The Father Himself. My correct theology, and even perfect scripture was like a limp balloon that with one look and a smile was blown up into all its fullness.

The answer to all four of these questions came at once, through my eyes, His eyes, the incredibly powerful loving eyes of a Daddy that enjoys his kid simply because she is His.

O that we would really know our Father’s deep, deep affection for us. I pray that all of my world views, strong opinions, and theology are drowned today by that one look from my jovial Father that enjoys me like nobody else exists. For me, that’s where love starts.
